A Scriptural Rosary
             by Paula Russi

There are many varieties of prayer beads for different religions; but we are only
concerned  with the spiritual discipline known as The Holy Rosary in the Catholic
tradition.  The rosary (rose garden)  is ancient and can be traced back to the ninth
century.   It has been prayed on pebbles, knotted cord, beads, and fingers.
Eventually, in about 1409, a Carthusian, St. Dominic of Prussia, divided the 150
Hail Mary's into groups of tens (decades) with an Our Father in between.  Today,
through many variations, we have what has come to be called The Traditional Rosary.

The Rosary/Chaplet

Chaplet is a French word meaning wreath or crown, it consists of a set of ten
beads for the Hail Mary's and five beads - two for two Our Father's and three
Hail Mary's for Faith, Hope and Charity strung together for counting our prayers.
The Tenner goes back to Ireland when Irish Catholics were forbidden under
English law from praying the rosary. It was made of ten tiny beads, for the
Hail Mary's, hence the name “tenner”, and easily hidden in the pocket
or hand. The Chaplet and Tenner, which is one decade of the traditional rosary,
has made a “come back”.  They fit easily into our busy lives: at the office,
on the bus, at the park, or on the bustling street. The Rosary is multifaceted; we
can contemplate the significance of the particular Mystery in the lives of Our Lord,
Jesus Christ  and His Blessed Mother while soliciting Mary’s intersession.

Bead-by-bead, the devotional impact of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed
Virgin Mary brings us face to face with Her Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus  Christ.

If you are new to the Rosary, carve out fifteen minutes a day and start
out praying one decade  a day and you  will soon pick up the rhythm and
the blessings that come with the devotion.
Select one scripture for
the mystery and perhaps one word will stand out for meditation.
As we meditate and pray the Hail Mary’s the world around us will
quite down with Mary’s loving presence.

Mary implores all of us to, “Pray, pray, pray.”

 The Most Holy Rosary
Make the Sign of the Cross
while holding the crucifix, cross, or pendent, we pray:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Apostle's Creed; while still holding the crucifix, cross, or pendent, we affirm our faith.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended unto
the dead; the third day He arose again from the dead;  He ascended
into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father
Almighty, from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen.

Pater Noster - Our Father – holding the first large bead, we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name;
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.   Amen

One Hail Mary on each of the next three small beads
for each virtue: 1. Faith  2. Hope  3.Charity

Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you amongst women, and
blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

Glory Be to The Father   - in the space before the next large bead:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

You may add: O MY JESUS, forgive us our sins, save
us from the fires of Hell and lead all souls to Heaven,
especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

The Twenty Mysteries of the Rosary:
Meditations on the Life of Jesus Christ and/with His Mother.

One Our Father on the large bead for the Mystery.
Moving to the right, ten Hail Mary's on the small beads. Repeat for each Mystery.

The Joyful Mysteries: Monday and Thursday
1st   Mystery: The Annunciation ~ For the grace of humility.
Humility is not groveling; it is honesty - truth about ourselves.
Luke 1:28 "Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee

            blessed art thou among women.
"
Mary was full of grace before Jesus was conceived in her womb!
Luke 1:26  Mary's Fiat (Yes to God):
"May it be done unto me according to your word"

2nd Mystery: The Visitation ~ Charity,  love thy neighbor as thyself.
A love that is spontaneous and unconditional.
Luke 1:42  Luke 1:41 "Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,
the child leaped in her womb and Elizabeth was
filled with the Holy Spirit."
Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit at the sound of Mary's voice!

3rd. Mystery: The Nativity ~  Emmanuel-God with us.
The birth of Jesus Christ.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His
only-begotten son, that those that believe
in Him may not perish, but have life everlasting."
Luke 2:19 "And Mary kept in mind all these things and pondered them in her heart."

4th  Mystery:  The Presentation ~  Obedience and Purity
Luke 2:32  ".. A light of revelation to the Gentiles, and a glory  for thy people Israel.
Luke 2:35  "Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother,
"Behold, this child is destined for the fall and for the rise
of many in Israel, and for a sign that shall be contradicted.
And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, and the thoughts
of many hearts may be revealed.'
Ps. 23 "... and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

5th.  Mystery: Finding Jesus in the Temple ~  Fidelity to one's duties -life vocation.
Luke 2:47  "...And all who were listening to him were amazed at his
                                          understanding and answers."
Luke 2:51  "... and his mother kept all these things carefully in her heart.

The Mysteries of Light - Or The Luminous Mysteries:  Tuesday or Thursday
These Mysteries were recommended by Pope John Paul II: they are indeed wonderful
and seem to have been sitting through the long centuries waiting for a presentation.
It is suggested these most excellent Meditations be prayed on Thursday. But for me,
they seem to follow the Joyous Mysteries, so fit better on Tuesday and that is where
I’ve put them.  Also I've added Biblical text to better acquaint us for contemplation.

The First Mystery:  The Baptism of Jesus
Matthew 1:13 – 17   “And when Jesus had been baptized, he immediately came up from the water.
… a voice from the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well  pleased.”
Acts 2:38 “But Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
John 3:5  “Jesus answered, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,
he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

The Second Mystery:   The Wedding at Cana
Jesus changes the water into wine and thus begins to manifest His glory
by the intercession of His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
If she does this without even being asked, think what she will do for us if asked.
John 2:5  She also gives the great exhortation:  “Do what ever He tells you.”
The water also reminds us of the drop of water that
represents us that is mixed with wine at Holy Eucharist.

The Third Mystery:  The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God – The Kingdom of God is within you.
Matthew 4:15 “… toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles – the people who sat in
darkness have seen a great light and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Revelation 21:10 “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And in the Spirit
he carried me away to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down
out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.”
Matthew 16:18 “And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers
of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you
bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
We pray in the Our Father:  “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

The Fourth Mystery of Light: The Transfiguration
Jesus gave Peter, James, and John a brief glimpse of His Divinity which we will behold at the end of time.
Luke 9:29 “And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became
dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke
of his departure, which he  was to accomplish at Jerusalem. …  35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying,
“This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!”  Here is the Trinity; the cloud is the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1:16   “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 for when he received honor
and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son,
with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we heard this voice borne from heaven for we were with him on the holy mountain.”

The Fifth Mystery of Light: The Holy Eucharist
I Corinthians 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus
on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and
said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying” This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do
this, as often as you drink the cup you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore,
eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body
and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For
any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.
John 6:48 “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any one eats of this bread, he will live
for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
John 6:53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man
and drink his blood, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal
life, and I will raise him up on the last day/”

Luke 9:23  "And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let
him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."

      5. The Crucifixion ~ Forgiveness

Luke 23:33"And when they came to the place called they Skull, the crucified him..."
Luke 23:46  "And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, 'Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit."
John 19:25  "Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas,
and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus, therefore, saw his mother and the disciple standing by, whom he loved,
he said to his mother, 'Woman, behold, thy son." Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold thy mother.'
and from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Closing Prayers

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up
our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.  Turn then, most
gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.  Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, That we may be
made worthy of the promises of Christ.

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection,
has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life.   Grant, we beseech
Thee that in meditating upon these mysteries of the most Holy Rosary
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain
what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.
